Various "Ayhud" Polities (Beta Israel) (1 gen 525 anni – 1 gen 1468 anni)
Descrizione:
Although poorly documented, there is evidence that much of the Ethiopian Kingdom of Axum was Jewish prior to the introduction of Christianity. Many who refused to convert to Christianity likely remained Jewish.
During the war between the Axumite Kingdom and the Kingdom of Himyar in 525, many of these Jews likely fled the empire or were exiled, especially to the region around Lake Tana which would later become the Kingdom of Semien. A Medieval Ethiopian chronicle asserts that "At this point the Falash[a] [Ethiopian Jews] were separated." As the Axumite state collapsed, these groups would have achieved political independence.
Subsequently, groups of people referred to as "ayhud" (Jews) located in these regions sporadically appear in the Ethiopian imperial records, though outside imperial control, until imperial control expands in the 15th century, and the Beta Israel polity centralizes, alongside the centralization of much of contemporary Beta Israel religious practice.
While we do not know much about these groups of Jews, we do know that they existed and lived free of Christian rule.
