Herod Antipas (1 ottob 4 anni a. C. – 1 gen 39 anni)
Descrizione:
Luke 3:1-2
Tetrarch over Perea and Galilee.
Antipas is renowned for imprisoning John the Baptist, sometime in 31 AD. The Biblical account states that John's imprisonment was the result of his outspoken disapproval of Herod for divorcing his wife (Phasaelis) and unlawfully taking Herodias, the wife of his brother Herod Philip I. Some time later, on Herod's birthday, Herodias' daughter (Salome) pleased Herod with her dancing that in his drunkenness he promised to give her anything she desired. When Salome asked Herodias what she should request, she was told to ask for the head of John on a platter. Herod reluctantly agreed and had John executed by beheading in the prison.
Josephus recounts the same story, though with some difference in detail. He wrote that Herod had John imprisoned and killed, "lest the great influence John had over the people might put it into his [John's] power and inclination to raise a rebellion, (for they seemed ready to do any thing he should advise)."
After Antipas' fall from grace, Emperor Caligula gave the territory to Herod Agrippa.
