Mamluk Sultanate (1 gen 1250 anni – 1 gen 1517 anni)
Descrizione:
In its own time, referred to as the state of Turks" or "Circassians" the Mamluk name is a historiographical convention referring to its origins.
"Mamluks" were slaves, that is the literal meaning of the word. They were slaves who would be expected to be loyal to their masters and trained as soldiers and bureaucrats. They would come to be a deeply influential group known as "Salihiyyah".
After the death of the sultan and his heir, the Salihiyyah Aybak came to power in Egypt, beginning centuries of Mamluk rule.
An effective military caste built around the Mamluks was constructed which ensured their loyalty and dominance. They would proceed to conquer the last holdouts of the Kingdom of Jerusalem and become the suzerain of the Crusader Kings at Cyprus.
While the Mamluks and their Egyptian holdings would be subjugated by the Ottoman Empire in 1517, Mamluks would continue to exercise great influence over Egypt until the time of Napoleon and his invasion of Egypt.
