In the aftermath of the Yellow Turban Rebellion, a large scale peasant revolt turn civil war, the central authority of the Emperors was diminished. An ambitious warlord by the name of Cao Cao took advantage of this and placed the emperor under his control, beginning a long, bloody and chaotic period in Chinese history which would be later mythologized in a story known to the west as "Romance of the three kingdoms".

Rather than truly being three distinct Kingdoms, these were three factions trying to establish control over China.

Millions would ultimately die from famine, disease and war, with many more fleeing China as refugees.

Ultimately the period would end with the rise of the Jin dynasty, who would reign until 420 AD.
