Abbasid Caliphate (1 gen 750 anni – 1 gen 1517 anni)

Descrizione:

The longest lasting of all the Caliphates, the Abbasids reigned during the high water mark of Arab culture and influence. It was during the first part of their reign that Islam flourished in what is often referred to as the "Golden Age of Islam". This saw magnificent artworks, poetry, philosophy and scientific and medical breakthroughs occur as well as the resurgence in interest in the classical world through the translations of Greek and Roman texts.

While the Caliphs would remain very influential, their temporal power would recede sharply throughout the 10th century. Local dynasties would gain more and more power throughout the Empire and ultimately the Abbasids would become vassals to the Seljuk Turkish Empire from the 10th century onwards. Nonetheless the Abbasids would outlast their overlords and continue their reign in Baghdad until the Mongol conquest and destruction of the city in 1258 drove them to Cairo.

Finally The last Abbasid Caliph would become a prisoner of the Ottoman Sultan, who in time would be recognised as the Sunni Caliph.
