Between 1207 and 1340, the Mongol Empire expanded rapidly, growing to become the largest empire in the world at its time and home to enormous wealth, cultural exchange and trade as well as death and destruction from warfare.

The deaths and destruction of towns and cities at this time, were so extreme in number that they may well have caused a measurable reduction in the world's carbon dioxide output according to a study at Cambridge in 2011.

Nonetheless the "Silk Road" prospered and vast amounts of wealth were exchanged, with peace in central Asia enabled by the firm hand of the Mongol Khans. Though the growth in links between Europe and Asia would also enable the arrival of the worst calamity in medcieval Europe, the Black Death.
