As members of the Holy Roman Empire chose to adopt their own versionf of Christianity and followed various reformation leaders, a divide was formed.

On the one hand the Evangelical League of Protestant nations, supported by the likes of Sweden and (ironically) France which composed much of Northern Germany and on the other, the Catholics, headed by Austria.

Austria under the Habsburg dynasty, had ruled the Holy Roman Empire for generations by this point, having had every Emperor since 1440, and they remained Catholic.

Conflict between the two sides began in 1618 after the defenestration of Prague and only ended with the peace of Westphalia in 1648 after 30 years.

The provisions of the treaties secured greater autonomy for the states that made up the HRE. Rulers could choose their faith and subjects were not required to follow the faith of their ruler.

The attention paid to individual states and their rights is credited with paving the way for the modern understanding of statehood, sovereignty and what it is to be a nation.
