The Levantine Crusades (1 gen 1099 anni – 1 gen 1291 anni)
Descrizione:
Concerned by the rapid growth of Islam and the latest Turkish successes against the Eastern Roman Empire, the Pope calls for a Crusade in which armed pilgrims were to take back the Holy Land. They would form the crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem which would last until 1291 with the successful retaking of Acre by the Mamluks, who ruled Egypt until the 19th century.
Crusades would be declared elsewhere with varying results, ranging from Egypt to Bulgaria to the South of France.
The Levantine crusades would be a much more significant event in European history than in Arab. Their successes and failures would be written about, portrayed, romanticised and analysed for centuries. During the 19th century, European powers who once more were sending military expeditions overseas on a percieved divine mandate, would often draw inspiration from the crusaders of yore.
A resurgence in Arab interest in the crusades only truly began as a consequence of the spread of European empires and "Western values" which themselves invited a reaction.
