In the aftermath of the end of the Western Roman Empire, there is a massive decrease in intercontinental trade in Europe. Existing power structures are either replaced or built upon and changed greatly. Small farmers have become heavily indebted to their landlords and a new class of rural peasantry and elites emerge.

This period sees the Carolingian Empire, Islamic expansion, the Macedonian Renaissance and the emergence of the Christian medieval Kingdoms of Europe and the first vikings.
