Often regarded as one of the greatest rulers / military leaders, Charlemagne carved an empire for himself out of Western Europe.
Through military conquest he was able to "restore" the Western Roman empire of old, being crowned by Pope Leo as "Emperor of the Romans." In reality he had created the polity known as the "Holy Roman Empire," which isn't exactly a successor to Rome in some historians'eyes.
His greatest military opponent were the Saxons.
He is often credited for catapulting the west into a renaissance of sorts, and building the foundations for Western culture and society.
