During this time, the leaders of the United States and the Soviet Union engaged in a 13-day political and military standoff. Following Kennedy's address to the people about the presence of the nuclear missiles, many feared that the U.S. was on the brink of a nuclear war. Kennedy and his advisors prepared for an attack on Cuba within days as they searched for any remaining diplomatic resolution. It was determined that Kennedy would ignore the second Khrushchev message and respond to the first one. The Cuban Missile Crisis ultimately strengthened Kennedy's image after the failure of the Bay of Pigs Invasion.
