The "Grand Siècle" is the name given to the century of Louis XIV, whose reign (1643-1715) was when one of the longest in the history of France. Indeed, the second half of the French 17th century is dominated by the person of Louis XIV and is characterized by grandiose works. It should be noted that contemporary historiography today applies it to a longer period that encompasses the majority of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century. It could run from the beginning of the reign of Louis XIII (1610) – which saw the re-establishment of royal authority and the end of the religious wars – until the death of Louis XIV in 1715 or the end of the Regency in 1723.
