The Renaissance and/or Enlightenment period was started by an increase in literacy resulting from the invention of the Printing Press in 1440. Also forming the start of this period was a revitalization of arts and culture due to the western world rediscovering Greco-Roman classical works which had thus far been lost. This era marks humanity's first major steps beyond feudalism, and the fall of the Eastern Roman or "Byzantine" empire ensured an age of discovery would commence by blocking Europe and Asia off from each other's trade, encouraging oceanic exploration of a scale never seen beforehand. It would transition into the industrial age some time around the 19th century due to the establishing of industrial factories and steam power.
