As the 2020's emerged from the unprecedented experiences of the Covid pandemic, it gradually became clearer and clearer that the global economy had taken a bigger hit than had been anticipated. Oil prices went awry, the US dollar began to fluctuate unpredictably (losing some of its credibility as a global reserve currency) and politics became more divided in the west than it had ever been in the lifetimes of most people presently alive.

The Russo-Ukranian war had the unintended consequence of dividing the once Unipolar Americanized world into opposing camps for the first time since the cold war. NATO and the BRICS alliance would experience tenser and tenser relations as the global temperature approached what felt like a boiling point.
