World War II or the Second World War, often abbreviated as WWII or WW2, was a global conflict that lasted from 1939 to 1945. The majority of the world's countries, including all of the great powers, fought as part of two opposing military alliances: the Allies, versus the Axis.
At the end of the war, political alignments shifted radically. The Soviet Union had been an ally of the Western alliance against the Axis led by Germany. The USSR became an ideological, political and military opponent of the West; whose nations formed their own alliance, NATO.
The resulting ideological competition split the world into two principle camps: Western democracy and capitalism, versus Soviet-backed authoritarian communism, sometimes referred to as socialism.
