The Korean War began on June 25, 1950 when 75,000 soldiers from the Soviet-backed Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North) and the pro-Western Republic of Korea (South). The aim of the North Koreans was to unite Korea under a dictatorial leadership with communist ideals.

This military action is widely known as the first action of the Cold War. American troops entered the battle on the side of South Korea, and as far as some officials were concerned, it was a fight against international communism itself. Americans were anxious to find an armistice with the North Koreans, to avoid any issues that might balloon the war into involving Russia or China - a possibility of World War III. After much fighting, and over 5 million deaths, in July 1953, the fighting came to a close as North Korea was defeated.
