Jefferson was born in a town in Virginia in 1743, and inherited a plantation, in which he tried to protect rights for enslaved people yet had slaves himself, but he could have treated them equally. Jefferson was importantly an author of the Declaration of Independence, but he was also the Third President of The United States of America.
