Safavid Empire (1 gen 1501 anni – 1 gen 1722 anni)
Descrizione:
An Islamic empire in Persia, ruled by twelver shiites. Followers of the Safavid empire were known as Qizilbash, because of their distinctive red hats with 12 pleats. The Turkish subjects (Qizilbash) enthusiastically accepted twelver shiism because it reinforced traditions of military and religious leadership. The Safavid rulers relied on Persian bureaucracy, and gave land grants to qizilbash officers. Shah Abbas the Great revitalized the Safavid empire in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, encouraging trade, reform of administration and the military, encouraging the use of gunpowder, and sought European help to fight the Ottomans. In the Safavid, Mughal, and Ottoman empires, women played an important role as private public figures. Islamic tradition forbade women from roles as full public figures, but they often served as advisors to their husbands, and in some cases led empires through their husbands.
