New communist leader for Vietnam in 1940s
-before Vietnam was part of a French colony.
-USSR and China recognised the new communist leader (Minh) as the legit leader o Vietnam in January 1950
-USA became convinced that Vietnam fell into communism, ad that other countries in Southeast Asia would do the same. (DOMINO THEORY)
-US sent aid to the French to try and help them resist Viet Minh but French were defeated in1954
-Was then decided that their should be a temporary split to form Communist north Vietnam and South Vietnam.
-USA helps install Anti communist leader in south Vietnam (Diem) In 1955
-Attempts to overthrow Diem were made by Vietcong and backed by the North, USA sent aid to back the south and help Diem.
-Diem was overthrown and assassinated by his own military in 1963 because political instability continued
Americans became more involved, In 1965 the first US combat troops were sent to Vietnam, by 1968 there was over 500,000 US troops in Vietnam.
-The USSR and China supported North Vietnam and the Vietcong, as the US got more involved, USSR gave more aid to the north (weapons such as missiles and radar systems)
-War became disastrous for the US and eventually withdrew troops by 1973 without victory, Vietnam became one communist country in 1975
-However Southeast Asia did not fall into communism as the US had feared.
