Square Deal (12 gen 1901 anni – 12 gen 1909 anni)

Descrizione:

Square Deal: Roosevelt’s domestic progressive policy.
Roosevelt (TR) had felt that average Americans had gotten a bad deal during industrialization. The Square Deal meant to make things fair for the average person.

3 parts:
1) Caring for consumers. The Jungle by Upton Sinclair (muckraker). Book was supposed to be about worker mistreatment. Everyone who read it focused on the unsanitary and gross meat-packing policies that were mentioned. TR passes sanitation acts (ex. Meat Inspection Act, Pure Food and Drug Act (made FDA)). The government starts regulating what companies sell (any company selling food has to be inspected by the gov).

2) Corporate Control. Trustbusting = breaking apart corporations that are monopolies. Breaking trusts. TR = trustbuster, he didn’t want the rich to have so much power, knew that monopolies were bad for workers and consumers. In industrial age, presidents helped corporations- TR broke that pattern. Square Deal is meant to assert that the Gov runs the country, not corporations.

3) Conservation of Nature. Yosemite National Park - TR’s pet project. TR wants a lot of national parks. Idea that some land should belong to all Americans (like Yellowstone). TR worried that Americans view resources as infinite. He was worried about conservation and the environment. He went without a Christmas tree one year to demonstrate his beliefs.
