Iconoclasm (1 gen 726 anni – 1 gen 843 anni)

Descrizione:

The period of iconoclasm that occurred in the Byzantine Empire officially began when Emperor Leo III issued a series of edicts starting in 726, finally banning the veneration of icons in 730.

However, in 787. the Empress Irene convened the Second Council of Nicaea, which condemned iconoclasm and restored the use of images.

A second phase of iconoclasm occurred in 814 when Emperor Leo V rose to power, and the use of icons was officially prohibited in 815.

This ended with the death of fellow iconoclast, Emperor Theophilus, whose death in 842 allowed his widow, Empress Theodora, to restore the veneration of icons in 843.
