German Expressionism was a style of art that peaked in 1908 and started to emerge in 1905. There was a discernible shift at this time away from realistic art and towards a more irrational, expressive approach to painting. Human figures were commonly employed by expressionist artists as a means of conveying their deepest feelings and experiences. They typically employed exaggerated, distorted shapes in an effort to convey the raw intensity of human experience in order to elicit unease or discomfort. Expressionist artists also experimented with colour, using bold hues to generate mood and emotion. Expressionist artists challenged accepted aesthetic rules, opening the door for the development of novel forms and techniques in modern art.
