Antonio, from the Savorgnan aristocratic Friulian family , in 1511 stirred up the revolt known as Crudel Joibe Grasse with a stratagem , staging an imperial attack on Udine on Shrove Thursday , 27 February, and arousing the people to defend the city : in the chaos of the situation, he directed the mass of the people and the cernide of which he was at the head, gathered in the pro-Venetian faction of the Zamberlani, against the pro-imperial nobility, who were massacred in large numbers, and in particular against the Della Torres, reference of the Strumieri. On him, in the same year, fell the responsibility of the defense of Friuli , dominion of the Serenissima , from the attacks that the German Empire (in the hands of the Austrian Habsburgs) put in place in that period, in a particularly difficult situation, due to the shortage of men and artillery pieces and the passage of important personalities to the imperial cause. Faced with the prospect of sacking Udine and following the promise of advantageous conditions, such as the maintenance of properties and fiefdomsand a permanent alliance with the emperor, he too surrendered to the invader. The republic, feeling betrayed, did not take it well: the Council of Ten established a prize equal to five thousand ducats, a sum added to the possible revocation of exile, for his assassination. In 1512 some Friulian nobles, including Girolamo and Agostino Colloredo, Giovanni Giorgio Zoppola and Giovanni Enrico Spilimbergo, who inflicted the final thrust on him, [1] attacked him at the church of San Giacomo in Villach and killed him in the nearby cemetery , where he had taken refuge.
