Great Depression (24 ottob 1929 anni – 1 gen 1939 anni)

Descrizione:

African Americans were economically especially hard hit through the Great Depression.

Industrial North: 'Last hired-first fired' as factories had to cut hours or close down African American workers were the first to lose their job and made up the greatest unemployment rate in inner cities.

Rural South: The "Dust Bowl", a series of droughts turned the soil to dust destroying homes and harvests. African American sharecroppers lost their rented lots of land being unable to give the set portion of the harvest in return for the land and were forced to migrate in search of jobs.

New Deal: President Franklin D. Roosevelt's relief program did barely reach African American workers since it did not include domestic workers and farmers which made up a large portion of them.
