African societies developed different types of organized societies, like kinship, stateless societies, and centralized states. During the Post-classical Period three different African Empires gained power. From the 4th-11th centuries was the empire of Ghana. Mali was from the 13th-15th Centuries. Songhay lasted the 15th through 16th century. Islam began to spread across north Africa during the 5th century. Islam played and still plays a large role in the area. May of the African rulers were Muslim. Cities such as Timbuktu and Jenne were established during this era. The different social changes and structures that developed during this time can still be seen even in the present day.
