In Udine he attended the school of Antonio da Firenze and later the workshop of Domenico Da Tolmezzo . In 1495 he proposed himself for a position as guardian at one of the gates of Udine, also promising to execute frescoes with the lions of San Marco on the gate itself. In any case, the post was refused.

From the beginning he was well received by the Friulian noble families, who commissioned him to paint several paintings. He demonstrated his knowledge of the technical and pictorial innovations that were establishing themselves outside Friuli; in particular he seems attracted by the great Venetian painters of the period, first of all Andrea Mantegna and Giovanni Bellini , then he follows the pictorial tendencies of Cima da Conegliano , Bartolomeo Montagna and the Ferrarese painters.

He was present several times in Ferrara at the Este court between 1500 and 1513, entering the service of Ercole I d'Este ; of the works created there, no trace remains. However, it is known that he was also active as a set designer and that in 1508 he prepared the sets for Cassaria dell' Ariosto and in the same year the sets for the Carnival of Ferrara, considered one of the first examples of perspective set design.

Back in Friuli, the new knowledge acquired at the Este court together with the Renaissance inventions learned made Pellegrino fully mature, who managed to translate everything into large-scale works such as the Annunciation of the shoemakers and the doors for the organ of the Cathedral of Udine . But it is above all in the large cycle of frescoes in the Church of Sant'Antonio Abate that Pellegrino binds his fame. Among his pupils should be mentioned Sebastiano Florigerio , Luca Monverde , the brothers Francesco and Antonio Floriani and above all Il Pordenone .
