Henrietta Lacks was an African-American woman who’s cancerous cells that were later discovered to have remarkable growth and regeneration properties. Her cells, known as HeLa cells, were the first human cells to be successfully cultured and reproduced outside the body, and they have since become indispensable tools in medical research. Her cells were taken without her consent during her treatment. For two decades, Mrs. Lacks’ cells were commercialized and distributed across the globe unknown to her family
HeLa cells were widely used in the development of polio vaccines as well as cancer, AIDS, and other disease research. They have been used to study cell biology, genetics, and other aspects of medicine and science, as well as to test the effects of various drugs.
