Second expedition to Peru (1 nov 1526 anni – 1 dic 1527 anni)
Descrizione:
Pizarro, Almagro and the navigator Bartolomé Ríos, in two ships containing 180 men and some horses, sailed to Peru and explored along the San Juan River.
A few months in, they realise that they do not have enough men or supplies, so they sent Almagro back to Panama to get some. When he got there, however, he discovered that Panama had a new leader (Pedro de los Ríos) who refused to give support to Pizarro's expedition, except as a rescue mission.
While Almagro was away, Pizarro let Ruiz explore South while he and his men remained on land. During this exploration, Ruiz and his men intercepted a large trading raft. On it, there were hundreds of valuable items including trinkets made of gold and silver, embroidered clothing, beads and jewels.
While Ruiz was exploring, Pizarro and his men explored inland and saw riches and intricately decorated stone buildings. He realised that there was a great civilisation there which was previously unnoticed by the Spanish.
Once all three parties had regrouped, they got into trouble with some of the natives. The expedition looked like it was going to fail, and Ruiz wanted to return to Panama to get more supplies. However, Pizarro was insistent on staying in Peru and continuing to explore. For this reason, some of them stayed on a nearby island while Almagro and Ruiz returned to Panama to ask for help.
As before, Ríos would only give help in the form of a rescue expedition. When this expedition reached Pizarro, most of the men were glad to get away, but Pizarro and 13 other men refused to leave.
These men explored into the empire they had found, and were welcomed in. They heard reports of a powerful monarch and many riches. After this, they decided to return to Panama to get more resources.
