David reigned for 40 years (2 years as king over Judah).

Was David a righteous or evil king?
Though David would commit many terrible sins, he was a righteous king, a "man after God's own heart" (Acts 13:22), who loved the Law of God and meditated on it daily (Psalm 119:47-48)

How does God turn David's sin with Bathsheba in the grand scheme of our salvation?
Bathsheba would give birth to Solomon, and from that line, Jesus Christ would be born.

Extra Detail:
David taking Bathsheba from her husband Uriah was not the only time David took another man's wife. In 1 Samuel 18, we are told that David marries Saul's daughter, Michal. When David flees, Saul takes Michal and has her marry a man named Paltiel. Later, when Ish-Bosheth becomes king over the northern tribes of Israel, David demands that Michal be brought back to him. Ish-Bosheth complies, and Michal goes back to David (with Paltiel following her, crying all the way) (see 2 Samuel 3:13-16).
