Korean War (25 giug 1950 anni – 27 lugl 1953 anni)

Descrizione:

The Korean War was initiated on June 25 of 1950 when North Korean troups invaded South Korea. The North Korean army was backed and advised by the Soviet Union, as well as the Peoples Republic of China. South Korea had funding and support of the United States. The North Koreans went across with 75,000 people who were trained and supplied by the Soviet Union. This invasion was the first act of milatary force during the Cold War.
The United States tried to make deals with North Korea in the begining of the war, but no deal was made. The fear was that this war was going to spread to be larger and cause much more conflict. Many people in the United States worried it was the first step in the Soviets idea of making the world communist. Harry Truman, the president at the time, justifying sending our own troups to Korea my claiming "If we let Korea down, the Soviet[s] will keep right on going and swallow up one [place] after another.”
After about a year of fighting, both sides reached a milatary stalemate, but there was no agreement made up until two years later when both sides finaly agreed on terms. In the deal, South Korea gained almost 1,500 square miles of land as well as a two mile demilitarized zone was placed between the two countires. Another contingency was that the POW's of each side could decide where they would want to live after they were released.
It is important to note the monstrous death toll that took place during this was which ended up being almost 5 million people, including civilians. 40,000 of the deaths were Americans.
