Who:
Otto the great: stopped a Hungarian invasion and took over Italy. Unified the Germans and strengthened the relationship with the Byzantine empire.
Pope Gregory the 3rd: ruled over papal states (states controlled by the church.). First pope to kill a Holy Roman emperor. And gave the pope more power over the empire.
What:
The Pope took the king from the country of the Franks and declared him the empire of the Holy Roman Empire.
The pope and the empire were in constant fighting. There was no clear answer to who was in charge of the empire. The empire followed Christianity.
It was multi-ethic: Germans, Italians, French, and more, but mostly German.
When: (987-1806)
Where: Middle of Europe with Spain for a while.
Why: Why was the pope so important to all of Christianity if he was in partial control of a country and had bias towards helping said country succeed?
They considered the Pope, as the closest to god, as more important than just one country.
End: Taken over by Napoleon and France in the Napoleonic War. Austria owned the Holy Roman Empire and decided to end it, when Napoleon was taking their territory.
Timely: Controlled a large part of Europe. Very important to Christianity as the pope lived there.
Lasting: Gave the pope the power to declare emperors.
Hitler considered it the 1st Reich and Nazi Germany the 3rd.
