Maegor had been exiled by Aenys I in 40 AC for refusing to set aside the second wife he had taken, Alys Harroway. His mother, Visenya, retrieved him from exile when Aenys I died in 41 AC and he claimed the throne, usurping Aenys' son, Aegon, beheading three grand maesters who protested his claim. This would contribute to his legacy as Maegor the Cruel and a kinslayer. By the time of his death, Maegor had taken six wives, three of which came to be known as the "Black Brides" as he married all three of them in a single ceremony after killing their husbands as their fertility was proven by the children they already had and Maegor was desperate for an heir. In 48 AC, Magor was found dead on the iron throne with his wrists slashed and one of the swords of the throne impaled through his neck. The exact circumstances of his death remain unknown.
