Seleucid king (born 215 - 164 BC)
-called himself "Epiphanes" implying he was Zeus on earth
-type of antichrist
-replaces the Jewish high priest Onias III with Onias' brother Jason (a Hellenizer)
-prohibited possession of the Torah, circumcision, festivals, and offerings to YHWH
-Mothers who circumcised their children were crucified with their babies hung around their necks
-invaded Jerusalem, erects a statue of Zeus in the Jerusalem temple and sacrifices a pig on the altar
-this is the "abomination of desolation" (Dan 9:27, 11:31, 12:11, Mt 24:15
-because of this outrage, a priest named Mattathias in the village of Modein begins the Maccabean revolt in 167 BC, ending the Greek period in Palestine
