British-born American astronomer and astrophysicist who proposed in her 1925 doctoral thesis that stars were composed primarily of hydrogen and helium, which was a groundbreaking discovery at the time. She became the first person–male or female–to earn a doctorate in astronomy from Harvard University and would later become the first woman to head a department at Harvard as the Chair of the Department of Astronomy.
