Mauryan Empire (1 gen 324 anni a. C. – 1 gen 185 anni a. C.)
Descrizione:
The Mauryan Empire was located generally in modern day India. It was founded by Chandragupta who unified India under his rule. He also defeated the Seleucids and then formed diplomatic relations with them which would lead to the eventual establishment of a trade route under one of his successors.
King Ashoka was the grandson of Chandragupta and in the vein of his predecessors began his rule as a forceful ruler in order to establish his dominance before stepping back. He converted to Buddhism and spread the religion. Architecturally, he is remembered for the construction of the Ashokan Pillars and the proliferation of stupas which are buildings containing a piece of Buddha. He continued the tradition of foreign relations with the west and even inscribed the tales of his rule in Aramaic as well as his own tongue.
Much of the history of the Mauryan empire was recorded by Megasthenes, a Seleucid diplomat, in Indika.
