The Monarchical Period of the Israelites is the period when the Hebrews or Israelites had their own state in the Promised Land. The Monarchical Period can be divided into two parts - the United Monarchy and the Divided Monarchy.

The United Monarchy was ruled by Saul, David and Solomon. Their histories are told in the books of Samuel, Kings and some of Chronicles within the Scriptures. Each of these kings had a key role in shaping the monarchy. Saul was the first king who created a governmental system. David was a great military leader and also was the author of many of the Psalms and Proverbs in the Bible. Finally Solomon was also a great military leader and also is remembered for building the First Temple.

The Divided Monarchy resulted from the cessation of 10 of the 12 tribes of Israel. The two kingdoms are then called Israel and Judah. Judah being the original retains Jerusalem. There was constant warfare between the two kingdoms. They eventually fell into the hands of Assyria.
