Revolutionary agitation occurred in many countries, being dubbed the “Atlantic Revolution” and an age of “Democratic Revolution”, since certain democratic principles were affirmed. These movements generally did not demand universal suffrage, did not aim at a welfare state or question the right of property, and were not especially directed against the monarchy. It was labeled as a demand for “liberty and equality”. It favored declaration of rights and explicit written constitutions and proclaimed the sovereignty of the people. Everything associated with absolutism, feudalism, or inherited right (except right of property) was repudiated, as well as anything connecting religion and citizenship.
