An advanced AI originally intended for routing data decided to terminate all other sophonts due to a misplaced programming directive, and proceeded to commit mass genocide by disabling the critical infastructure around the Solar System, causing trillions of deaths. Centuries of guerilla campaigns waged across Earth would attempt to fight off the algorithm, sometimes getting as far as seizing entire continents and SeaSprawl superblocks, but the last rebels surrendered after hiding out in the nature preserves of the former United States.
