The Cold War (2 gen 1947 anni – 26 nov 1991 anni)
Descrizione:
The Cold War continued the trend from WWII: the lack of equality between the races in the USA was a propaganda gift for the Soviet Union. The Cold War atmosphere contributed indirectly to the civil rights cause because the mismatch between the USA's championing of the free world and its treatment of a racial minority within it's own country was causing increasing concern among many thinking people. Contributed to a gradual change of attitude/ more sympathetic response to civil rights issues.
Evidence of the impact of war and the cold war on the fight for civil rights.
However:
NAACP suffered somewhat in the immediate post-war era. In the Cold War climate, any kind of radical activity or attempt to upset the status quo was questioned. Du Bois was arrested as a Soviet agent in 1951; the NAACP found it difficult to hold meetings because of accusations of communism and the states of Alabama and Louisiana banned it completely in the mid-1950s, accusing it of being too radical. Forced to fight expensive battles to establish its legality, the NAACP lost money that could have gone towards civil rights legal cases.
Evidence of the Cold War being a hindrance in some ways, to civil rights advances.
