World War 2: 'The Double V' Economic opertunities (30 sett 1938 anni – 16 sett 1945 anni)

Descrizione:

The armed forces were still segregated during the war but the war acted as a force of change of attitude. this was because of the irony of the USA fighting a racist ideology like Nazism while oppressing black people at home was highlighted by black leaders and journalists. Black and liberal white journalists compared southern racists to nazis and campaigned of a 'Double V' - victory against racism abroad and at home. In addition, the NAACP publicised the fact that black people were often rejected from military service on the grounds of illiteracy - i.e. the war highlighted the lack of black educational achievements.

Economic opportunities for black people increased as a result of WW2. The war exacerbated black migration which was already well underway in the 1920s and 1930s. in 1940, over three-quarters of the 13.5 million black people still lived in the rural south but during the war, a further 500,000 moved to the north to find work in defence industries. For black women in particular, this meant a greater variety of economic opportunities: before 1941, three-quarters of them worked in domestic service; by 1945 it was less than half.

Evidence of the war creating economic opportunity.
