European Exploration was begun to establish trade routes to increase wealth. European countries also wanted to expand their empires. The exploration was begun by the Portuguese and Spanish, followed by the Dutch, English, and French. Christopher Columbus was the greatest European explorer commissioned by Spain. His attempts to reach Asia caused him to land in the Caribbean islands in 1492. Advances in knowledge and technology such as navigation instruments, better weapons and ships made the explorations flourish in the 1400s.
