In 1493, Alfonso II of Naples upon his ascension immediately came to the defense of of his daughter Isabella, who was in conflict with her rival and ambitious cousin Beatrice, Ludovico Sforza's wife. Alfonso occupied Bari as a first act of hostility. Ludovico responded by allying himself with Emperor Maximilian and King Charles VIII of France, whom he allowed to pass through Italy to conquer the kingdom of Naples, which Charles considered his legitimate possession. Maximilian promised to recognize the rights of the Sforzas to the Duchy. Charles VIII was achieved in Asti, along with his cousin Louis d'Orléans, who realized that Italy was virtually defenseless. The French would later besiege Naples, breach the walls of the castle, and storm it, killing everyone inside. Following the Sack of Naples, an anti-French alliance was formed called the League of Venice, composed of Venice, Milan, Spain and the Holy Roman Empire. Louis d'Orléans tried to take advantage of this change of sides to conquer Milan. Ludovico had a nervous breakdown, and his soldiers were on the verge of mutiny. His wife Beatrice took personal control of Milan and the subsequent siege of Novara, in which Louis was forced to surrender in return for his freedom.
