Under Doge Francesco Foscari, the city reached the height of its power and territorial extent. This occurs when Venice defeated Milan in the Battle of Maclodio in 1425 as part of the Wars of Lombardy, gaining a shift in the western border, though this gain in territory was not universally welcomed in Venice. Venice then face a new alliance formed by Milan in 1446, and are victorious. Visconti died, and the Doge allied with Sforza to give him the rule of Milan in exchange for Brescia and Vicenza. However, when the power of Sforza was becoming excessive Venice changed sides again, until the Peace of Lodi. in 1453, Constantinople fell to the Ottomans, but the Ottomans granted Venetians their ports and trading rights. However, war was unavoidable in the long run.
