In the early 15th century, the Venetians further expanded their possessions in Northern Italy and acquired definitive control of Dalmatian coast from Ladislaus of Naples. Venice installed their own nobles to govern the latter, in response to expansion threat of Milan. By 1410, Venice had taken most of Venetia, including cities such as Verona and Padua. In 1420 Venice invades other Dalmatian cities following the expiration of a truce with Sigismund of Hungary, as they consolidated Adriatic dominions. Under Doge Francesco Foscari, the city reached the height of its power and territorial extent, when Venice defeated Milan in the Battle of Maclodio in the Wars of Lombardy. Visconti died, and the Doge allied with Sforza to give him the rule of Milan in exchange for Brescia and Vicenza, until his power was becoming excessive and Venice changed sides again, up until the Peace of Lodi. in 1453, Constantinople fell to the Ottomans, but the Ottomans granted Venetians their ports and trading rights. However, war was unavoidable in the long run, and the Ottoman success would force Venice into a peace treaty ceding Argo, Negroponte, Lemnos and Scutari and agreeing an annual tribute. In 1482-4 Venice participated in the War of Ferrara, and despite many setbacks in battle, Venice ultimately gained the Polesine and Rovigo and increased their prestige in Italy. Brief campaigns were fought against Pope Innocent VIII and Sigismund of Austria in the late 1480's, and later participated in the Battle of Fornovo with the Italian League against Charles VIII of France. Alliance with Spain and Aragon in their reconquest of Naples granted it control of important Apulia ports in Lowe Adriatic and Ionian islands. At the end of the century Venice was the second largest city in Europa and probably the richest in the world.
