War of Curzola and Byzantine-Venetian War (1 gen 1294 anni – 1 gen 1302 anni)
Descrizione:
Genoese massacre of the Venetian quarter in Constantinople escalates tensions and war is declared. A steep decline in Byzantine-Venetian relations following the Fourth Crusade resulted in the Byzantine Empire supporting the Genoese side. While the Venetians made swift advances into the Aegean and Black Seas, the Genoans were dominant throughout the war and bested the Venetians in the Battle of Curzola in 1298, with a truce signed the following year. This truce, which had reasonable terms and did not much hamper Venetian power, freed Venice to begin war with the Byzantines. Reinforcements in the form of privateers aid the Venetian fleet in capturing many Byzantine islands in the Aegean Sea. A Venetian show of force on island of Prinkipos next to Constantinople led the Byzantines to propose a peace treaty. The Venetians returned most of their conquests, gave a few islands to privateers, and the Byzantines repaid the Venetians for their losses.
