Venetian - Genoese Wars (1 gen 1256 anni – 1 gen 1381 anni)
Descrizione:
A series of struggles between Genoa and Venice for dominance in the Mediterranean. There were four bouts of open warfare, with the fighting taking place largely at sea. Even during period of peace, incidents of piracy and other minor outbreaks of violence were commonplace. It left the rivalry unresolved. Venice was left severely weakened, but was gradually able to rebuild its public finances and take advantage of the weaknesses of its mainland rivals to redress its losses. Genoa had less success in dealing with accumulated war debts, and fell into deepening financial incapacity over the following decades. Its chronic political instability became acute after 1390. These developments diminished Genoa's capacity to compete with Venice politically, although its commercial fortunes continued to flourish. Sporadic piratical violence between the two would continue. Genoa lost the naval ascendency that the city-state had enjoyed prior to the war, and ended the long competition between Venice and Genoa. Genoese shipping was no longer seen in the Adriatic afterwards.
