The final major military action in the Vicksburg Campaign of the American Civil War. After a series of small Northern attacks on May 1863, Gen. Grant orders the siege of Vicksburg. Over 30,000 confederate troops surrender. The Union then controlled the Mississippi River and the majority of the Southern Railroads.
