Siege of Carthage (1 gen 149 anni a. C. – 1 gen 146 anni a. C.)

Descrizione:

The Siege of Carthage lasted 3 years, from 149 BCE - 146 BCE. In 149, the Romans ordered Carthage to surrender their “200,000 individual weapons and 2,000 catapults” as part of a treaty created after the second Punic War. Carthage did so, and then in a surprise additional demand, Rome ordered Carthage to move further inland and give up the city. Unsurprisingly, Carthage did not obey this order because moving inland would mean abandoning shrines, temples, their homes, and most importantly, their advantageous location on the sea for trade and expansion. In response, Rome gave the order to siege the city. Notably, at this point, Carthage was a disarmed city that had little military power and mainly only had influence through trade. After the siege was over, Carthage suffered estimated losses of 62,000 dead and 50,000 enslaved.
