The Second Great Awakening impacted American society by reviving Protestant religious ideals and popularizing the belief that everyone, regardless of social class, could achieve redemption through doing good deeds and encouraging others to convert to Protestantism. These ideals led to the rise of reform movements in various fields, such as education, prisons and asylums, abolition, and feminism.

The three causes of the Civil War were debates between free and slave states, states versus federal rights, and and the election of Abraham Lincoln. Tension between free and slave states clearly demonstrated which states wanted slavery and who didn't. This led to more tension in black people having freedom in certain, but if in another state, that freedom can be restricted. State versus federal rights exposed the lack of checks and balances and who doesn't or does get more say in politics. Furthermore, the election of Abraham Lincoln was a cause because he was clear about his support in abolishing slavery. Therefore, knowing how conservative and pro-slavery most US states were, they saw this as a threat to their solely labor economy.
