Ghettos (1 ottob 1939 anni – 15 magg 1945 anni)
Descrizione:
The ghettos were one of the first steps towards the slaughter of Jews. The first ghetto was established in Poland in October of 1939. Ghettos were confined areas, where Jews were transported. The large crowd and the limited space and resources resulted in overcrowding, starvation, and disease. It was supposed to be temporary, but the ghettos, under the governance of the Judenrat (Jewish Council), usually contained a community, with medical services, along with religious, educational, and cultural activities. The ghetto occupants tried to live as normal a life as possible, but German officers and their orders would constantly remind them of their situation. Ordered to surrender their homes and their belongings, and forced to supply labor, the Jews were exploited and tortured as they struggled to survive. The Nazis ultimately deported countless Jews to the extermination camps under the disguise of “resettlement.” A smaller percentage were sent to labor camps or concentration camps. Resistance efforts were rarely successful.
